Aly Ben Salem
Tunisia, 1910–2001About The Artist
Aly Ben Salem was a pioneering Tunisian artist whose work bridged tradition and modernism. As the first Tunisian to attend the Tunis School of Fine Arts in 1930, Ben Salem drew on his training under Armand Vergeaud to infuse his art with Tunisian iconography. He quickly gained recognition, winning the Tunisian Government Prize of Fine Arts in 1936, and exhibiting in Paris, Montparnasse.
Returning to Tunisia during World War II, he founded the School of Fine Arts in Sfax. In 1950, he emigrated to Sweden, where he continued to champion Tunisian independence and craft traditions. Ben Salem’s work included painting, mosaic, and glass art, with exhibitions across Tunisia, Sweden, the United States, and Europe. His honors include the Officer of the Swedish Royal Order (1973) and Grand Officer of Tunisian Arts and Letters (1992). Tunisia declared 2010, his centenary, the National Day for Culture in his memory.
