Marginalized Artists are Front and Center at the 2024 Venice Biennale

 

At a press conference this morning, Pedrosa, the biennale’s first Latin American curator, highlighted the considerable geographic spread of the artists he had selected with an emphasis on Indigenous artists and those from the Global South. The total number of artists included this year far surpasses the 213 included in the 2022 edition.

The Biennale’s outgoing president Roberto Cicutto also announced “today, I’m passing the presidency to Pietrangelo Buttafuoco.” The right-wing journalist was controversially nominated to take over by Italy’s culture minister Gennaro Sangiuliano, putting an end to Cicutto’s presidency after just one term out of a possible three.

“We are managing this passage,” he added, “fulling respecting the institution, so that everything that will take place will be in line with the quality that the Biennale deserves.”
