Thameur Mejri

  • Biography

    Born in 1982, Tunis, Tunisia

Lives and works in Nabeul, Tunisia

Thamer Mejri‘s drawings and paintings offer a critical view on modern society and contemporary culture in Tunisia in particular. Influenced by the reversal of codes in Pablo Picasso and Francis Bacon‘s representations of the human figure, the body is central to Mejri‘s practice, serving as a site where the sacred and profane meet, and as a means to address topics that may be considered taboo.

Dealing with issues of brutality, bigotry, and masculinity, the physical body is inscribed with repressive constraints. Through the opposition of everyday domestic objects and tools like television sets, knives, hammers, to tools of power such as microphones, cars, guns, and tanks, the works question how power and authority provoke fear, anger and uncertainty.

He is pursuing his PhD in in Sciences and Technology of Arts while exhibiting regularly in Tunisia and abroad. His works are part of various private and public collections including Barjeel Art Foundation, Sharjah and Sindika Dokolo Collection, Luanda.
